Why do people talk about Diabetics?
Diabetics Mellitus is a global problem with devastating human, social and economic impacts. As estimated by the WHO now more than 200 million people all around the world are living with diabetes and by 2030; the expected total number of people is 366 million in the world population. Each and every year more than 7 million numbers are added to this list.
So What is it?
Insulin?
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, which is located behind the stomach. Insulin enables your body to use glucose as fuel. Glucose is a type of sugar that can be found in a variety of carbohydrates. To control the amount of glucose in the body, the pancreas, an organ located behind the liver and stomach, secretes digestive enzymes as well as the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream in healthy people.
If sugar is unable to be transported into cells the sugar remains in the bloodstream and produces a state of high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia)
This prolonged state cause to damage the body by affecting large blood vessels (macrovascular) and small blood vessels (microvascular) and it may cause heart disease, blindness, kidney issues, nerve damage, erectile dysfunction and amputation of limbs.
What are the types
- Type 1 diabetes
- type 2 diabetes
- gestational diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This means that your immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in your pancreas that produce insulin by mistake. The harm is irreversible.
It is unclear what motivates the attacks. There could be genetic as well as environmental factors. It is not believed that lifestyle factors play a role.
Insulin resistance is the first sign of type 2 diabetes. Because your body cannot use insulin efficiently, your pancreas produces more insulin until it can no longer keep up with demand. Insulin production then declines, resulting in high blood sugar.
Type 2 diabetes has an unknown cause
Factors that may contribute include:
- A more sedentary lifestyle due to genetics
- Obesity or being overweight
- Other health and environmental factors may also be involved.
- Gestational diabetes is caused by insulin-blocking hormones that are produced during pregnancy.
- This type of diabetes only happens during pregnancy. It is often seen in people with preexisting prediabetes and a family history of diabetes.
- About 50 per cent of Trusted sources of people diagnosed with gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes.
- high blood triglyceride levels >150mg/dL
- Low blood HDL cholesterol<40mg/dL
- High blood pressure (Systolic>130 or diastolic >85mmHg
- High fasting plasma glucose >100mg/dL
Gestational diabetics only occur during pregnancy. after the delivering baby, the blood sugar returns to normal. Women who have GD area t higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes to prevent it meal planning, exercise, and possible medication should be used during pregnancy.
What is the prediabetics?
Pre-diabetics are not considered diabetics but have blood sugar that is higher than normal values. it is the state of increasing the risk of progressing diabetes, though it was normal there are millions of people living with prediabetics all over the world.
there are two stages of prediabetics they are IGT- impaired Glucose Tolerance and IFG-impaired fasting Glucose. IGT falls between normal it is not a disease but it is a risk factor for future diabetics and it is associated with muscle insulin resistance and defective insulin secretion, this is the most important stage of prediabetics to prevent the onset of diabetics.
IFG is also a risk factor for future diabetics and is associated with impaired insulin secretion and impaired suppression of liver glucose output. Identification of this stage helps to the occurrence of diabetics.
Can I identify diabetics myself?
many people with type 2 diabetes may be symptomless but some are present.
- Lethargy
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- increase Urine excretion, especially at night
- excessive thirst and water ingestion
- skin infections such as boil carbuncles and abscesses
- white plaques in the tongue due to oral fungal infections
- non-healing wounds
- numbness and blurred vision
How to Check it if I have some of the above symptoms?
